Eggs and Potatoes

I saw a quote the other day that starts "The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg."

What a loaded statement packed into a food metaphor! The gist of this philosophy is that the same circumstances of life will affect different people in wildly different ways; the same event can have a varied impact on someone based on a range of factors, from their past experiences to their present condition.

It is so important to understand that the same way of doing things won't work for everyone, in the same way the boiling water won't have an identical effect on the potato as the egg. For some people, it is easy to focus on changes in their eating habits on their journey to increased wellness; for others, related changes must come first in order for them to have continued success. Sometimes it is easy for a person to make a lifestyle change quickly, but for someone else incremental changes might have a greater chance of a lasting impact.

This is one of the main reasons why my approach as a health and wellness coach is to get to know my clients and evaluate their current position and needs, before we get started on any adjustments or transitions. After all, no one wants to be treated as a potato when they're actually an egg! In this way, I can formulate a specific and custom plan for each of the individuals that I work with, ensuring I am guiding them forward with the care and respect they deserve to achieve their personal wellness goals.
